Sri Lanka, is an island country in the northern Indian Ocean. Known as Ceylon until 1972, “The Pearl of the Indian Ocean” has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest.
The island spans a modest 65 000 km² and has 21 million inhabitants, with the dominant religion being Theravada Buddhism. However Sri Lanka is also home to many Hindus, Muslims, and Christians alike.
The Island has three official languages: Sinhala, Tamil and English.
The several years-long civil war with the Tamil Tigers is now over.
Sri Lanka is well known for its diversity of tourist attractions. From it’s Ancient Ruins, temples, stupas and ancient universities (all dating back to 500 BC) to it’s picturesque beaches. It’s “high country” tea and rubber plantations, sapphire mines, mountain ranges, waterfalls and its stunning National Parks with a lot of wildlife and of course do not forget the coconuts.
Sri Lanka is also know for it’s world class local cuisine and hospitality. This island truly offers something for everyone.
